About the event
In this International Holocaust Remembrance Day talk, Bernice Lerner will describe events leading up
to January 27, the date Auschwitz was liberated. She will share astounding facts about the subsequent
liberation of Bergen-Belsen, the largest concentration camp at the war's end. And how she went
about writing a book that details this liberation from the points-of-view of Glyn Hughes, the doctor
who led rescue efforts, and Rachel Genuth, a survivor who would grow up to become her mother.
Dr. Bernice Lerner is the author of All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the
Liberation of Bergen-Belsen, and other writings on the Holocaust and on virtue ethics. As director of
Boston University’s Center for Character and Social Responsibility, Bernice lectured widely and taught
courses on character education and on the Holocaust. Most recently, she served as Dean of Adult
Learning at Hebrew College.
